Israel strikes Iran military targets, Tehran says damage ‘limited’ (Videos)
In the latest escalation of tensions in West Asia, Israel launched precise airstrikes on military targets within Iran early Saturday in response to a recent barrage of ballistic missiles fired by Iran on October 1, which marked the second direct attack on Israel in six months. The strikes, according to Israel, are aimed at countering ongoing “hostile actions from the regime in Iran.”
Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari confirmed the attacks, saying, “The Israeli Army is now precisely targeting military installations in Iran.” He emphasized that the Israeli forces remain fully prepared for both defensive and offensive measures, noting the army’s continuous assessment of regional security and its readiness to respond to potential threats.
Iranian air defense forces reported that the strikes caused “limited damage” and targeted multiple military sites around Tehran and nearby cities, with several strong explosions reported near the capital. Following the attacks, Iran’s aviation authority suspended all flights, citing security concerns. Iraqi airspace was also closed to civil aviation, as Iraq’s government prioritized air safety amid regional instability.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, seen monitoring the strikes, warned of consequences for any escalation attempts from Iran or its regional proxies. Meanwhile, the United States, informed of the strikes beforehand, has stated that Israel’s actions fall under self-defense following Iran’s recent missile attack.
The ongoing developments signal heightened alert in West Asia, with both countries asserting their readiness to respond to further provocations.
However, Iran said its air defense system successfully intercepted Israel’s attacks on military targets in the provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam with “limited damage” to some locations.
Israeli media reports that an “unknown air defense system” was used to shoot down targets over Tehran province.
