Kano court disqualifies all NNPP candidates for LG elections

The Federal High Court in Kano has disqualified all 44 candidates from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) vying for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 26, 2024. This decision arises from a legal challenge initiated by Engineer Muhammad Babayo and a faction of the NNPP contesting the legitimacy of the party’s leadership.

Justice Simon Amobeda delivered the verdict on Friday, emphasizing the need for adherence to the party’s internal constitution. The court ordered the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) to exclusively recognize the candidate list submitted by Dalhatu Shehu Usman, the faction’s recognized State Chairman, effectively nullifying any alternative lists presented by other party members.

Additionally, Justice Amobeda mandated that the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) refrain from deploying security personnel to polling stations unless the current candidate list is amended. He further instructed KANSIEC not to release the voters’ register for the elections until these conditions are met.

The ruling intensifies existing tensions surrounding the local government elections in Kano and raises pertinent questions regarding the NNPP’s internal conflicts and the implications for the party’s political future. As the election date approaches, the party faces a critical juncture that may affect its strategy and viability in the region.

This judicial decision could have far-reaching consequences not only for the NNPP but also for the political landscape in Kano as candidates and party members grapple with the aftermath of the court’s ruling.
