Kidnapped sports journalists released; SWAN lauds security agencies

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has announced that six journalists kidnapped by suspected secessionist gunmen while traveling to Uyo have been rescued.

In a statement, SWAN Secretary-General Ikenna Okonkwo said, “We want to inform our members across Nigeria and beyond that some of the sports journalists, abducted while covering the first leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between the Super Eagles and Libya, have been released.”

SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin and the national secretariat acted quickly after the journalists were taken near the Anambra/Imo border, and they received confirmation of their release following pressure from Nigerian security forces.

SWAN commended the Nigerian Army and Police for their swift response, which led to the rescue of the journalists, most of whom are camera/photojournalists. They are now returning to their families or resuming official duties.

The association urged its members to remain calm while performing their professional duties and to maintain regular communication with their local SWAN chapters. The national leadership of SWAN is dedicated to the welfare and well-being of its members.
