Kwara Poly: 3 dismissed police officers charged to court over student’s murder
The Kwara State Police Command has charged three dismissed police officers, Abiodun Kayode, James Emmanuel, and Oni Philip, with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide over the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a 21-year-old student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
The officers were arraigned before the Kwara State High Court on October 16, 2024. This was confirmed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Kwara State, DSP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, on Friday, October 18, 2024.
“The Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the public that the three dismissed officers have been charged to court on 16th October, 2024.
They face charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide in connection with the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola. They have been remanded in prison custody pending further court proceedings,” the statement read.

Ishola, who was an ND II student in the Department of Electrical Electronics, was allegedly shot dead during a stop-and-search operation by the accused officers in the Fate area of Ilorin on September 4, 2024. His killing sparked outrage, leading to protests and demands for justice.
The Kwara State Police Command had earlier promised that the officers found responsible for the killing would be prosecuted in a court of competent jurisdiction, which they have now acted upon with this arraignment. Further court proceedings are expected to follow soon.
