Man sentenced to eight strokes of cane for goat theft
A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday ordered that 21-year-old scavenger, Ibrahim Usman, be given eight strokes of the cane for stealing a she-goat.
The convict, who admitted committing the offence, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, saying that he was misguided by his friends.
Emmanuel ordered that Usman receive eight strokes of the cane and cautioned him to refrain from criminal activity in the future, noting that the court might not be as lenient during any future appearances.
Earlier, Prosecution Counsel Insp. Chidi Leo informed the court that the offense took place on October 6 at Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna. He explained that the convict was apprehended by members of a vigilante group while carrying the goat on Ali Akilu Road and could not provide a satisfactory explanation for its possession.
Leo added that the convict admitted to stealing the goat from his neighbor’s house when questioned at the police station. The prosecutor stated that the offense violated the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
