Man Utd fire another blank in Aston Villa stalemate
Manchester United’s winless streak extended to five games with a 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on Sunday, adding to the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag. Bruno Fernandes came closest to breaking the deadlock, hitting the crossbar with a second-half free-kick, but United have now failed to score in three consecutive Premier League matches.
The result leaves United in 14th place, having secured only two wins from their first seven league matches. Aston Villa, currently in fifth, missed an opportunity to move into the top four, unable to replicate their recent Champions League win over Bayern Munich.

United’s recent struggles include a 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham and a 3-3 draw with Porto in the Europa League, where they squandered an early lead before salvaging a point thanks to Harry Maguire’s last-minute equalizer. In response to these setbacks, Ten Hag made several changes to his lineup, dropping center-backs Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt and opting for Maguire and Jonny Evans.
Both teams showed signs of fatigue, and the game lacked intensity. Marcus Rashford, who was United’s main attacking threat, forced Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez into a couple of saves. Rashford, however, narrowly avoided a red card for two quick fouls, prompting Ten Hag to substitute him.
Fernandes, whose red card from the Tottenham match had been rescinded, nearly scored with a free-kick that struck the bar. Meanwhile, Villa’s Jhon Duran, known for scoring off the bench, was unable to make an impact.
United now head into the international break with just eight points from seven games—their worst league start since 1989. Co-owner Jim Ratcliffe was in attendance, and the break may prompt United’s leadership to reconsider Ten Hag’s future with the club.
