Millions lost as boat capsizes
Goods worth millions have been destroyed after a boat capsized in Delta State.
The incident occurred around 2:30 pm at the Onu-Utu junction along the Onuaboh River in the Ndokwa East Local Government Area, according to reports.
Confirming the incident, Chief Umu-Aka, chairman of the Marine Boat Association of Osuofia Ward, stated that the boat named Ogbue Umu-Oshele was en route to the Iselegu market when it capsized.
He reported that while many goods were lost, there were no casualties. “We immediately dispatched speedboats, barges, and open boats to rescue lives and recover remaining goods. Unfortunately, not everything could be salvaged,” he lamented.
A member of the rescue team, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that the boat, which usually carries over 200 passengers, capsized due to strong oceanic currents. He identified two injured individuals: Mrs. Ehechi Emeluwe, a trader, and Mr. Eugene Ike. Other injured passengers, including a crew member, have not yet been identified, but all lives were saved after a three-hour rescue operation.
Residents are now urging the government to enhance safety measures for transportation used by traders.
