Mother arrested for abandoning newborn in drainage system
A housewife named Barkisu Sulaiman has been arrested by residents of Karaworo-Lokoja for allegedly throwing her newborn baby into a drainage system.
Her arrest took place on Tuesday after a tip-off from a close friend in the Kabawa area of Lokoja. Concerned for the baby’s welfare, the friend confided in an elderly man about the incident.

According to a local resident who wished to remain anonymous, the friend revealed that Barkisu had previously disclosed she was seven months pregnant with the child of one of her ailing husband’s servants from Adankolo-Lokoja.
The friend also disclosed that the alleged father of Barkisu’s baby, who is currently at large, had denied responsibility and advised her to terminate the pregnancy.
After learning this, local residents took action and arrested Barkisu. She reportedly confessed to throwing her one-day-old baby into the gutter, explaining that she felt compelled to do so due to her infidelity with her ailing husband.
Paul Igweibuke, the Kogi State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, confirmed her arrest on Wednesday, stating, “She is in our custody, and an investigation is ongoing.”
