Naira Redesign: Court grants EFCC’s request to present witness virtually

Justice Mary Anenih of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) permission to present two witnesses virtually in the trial of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele.

This ruling, made on October 18, 2024, allows the EFCC to use video links to hear testimony from witnesses currently residing abroad.

The EFCC is prosecuting Emefiele on a six-count charge, which includes the unlawful printing of new naira notes. During the court proceedings, the EFCC’s counsel informed the judge that the two witnesses planned for the next phase of the trial are located in the United States.

The prosecution has faced challenges in bringing these witnesses to Nigeria and sought the court’s approval to conduct their testimony via platforms like Zoom.

The defence counsel did not oppose the application but requested clarification on whether these witnesses would be the final ones called by the prosecution.

After considering the submissions, Justice Anenih granted the request and adjourned the case to several future dates: November 14 and 26, December 4, 2024, and January 21, 2025.
