The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), launches the Bashir Adeniyi Centre for International Trade and Investment, aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s trade and investment landscape.

The centre, named after the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, was inaugurated on October 24, 2024, in Lagos.

Expressing optimism about the centre’s potential, the CGC stated, “The establishment of this Centre comes at an opportune time as Nigeria is repositioning itself in the global trade environment. As we advance these initiatives, I envision that this Centre will evolve into a comprehensive national think tank focused on international trade and investment.”

In his welcome address, NIIA Director General, Professor Eghosa Osaghae, highlighted the centre’s role in professional development for customs officers. “Today, we proudly announce that we now have the Bashir Adeniyi Centre for International Trade and Investment. This centre will serve as a finishing school for senior customs officers, offering certificated senior executive courses. By integrating the Nigeria Customs Service into the framework of the World Customs Organisation, we are ensuring a global perspective,” he stated.

The launch event included a panel discussion featuring prominent Nigerians, such as Donald Duke and Dr. Chinyere Almona, who explored challenges and solutions related to Nigeria’s economy concerning trade and investment.

The CGC emphasized the centre’s significance, saying, “We are committed to our mandate of trade facilitation, and we believe this centre will excel in building capacity and raising awareness about the importance of international trade. Trade brings prosperity, and we hope that this centre will foster prosperity through trade.”

The CGC officially unveiled the centre and toured the facility, marking a pivotal moment for the Nigeria Customs Service and its commitment to enhancing international trade in the country.
