New education curriculum set to launch in January 2025 – Minister

The Federal Ministry of Education announced on Monday that the new basic education curriculum will be implemented in schools nationwide starting January 2025.

The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, disclosed this in Abuja during a stakeholders meeting on the implementation of the new curriculum. He stated that the new curriculum for senior secondary education will also begin in September 2025.

Professor Mamman emphasized that the new curriculum aims to address the learning crisis and improve employability by introducing skills acquisition programs that will equip students with 21st-century skills.

He noted that the next three months will be dedicated to the preparatory stage, which includes developing teachers’ guides for using the curriculum effectively.

The Director of Curriculum at the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Dr. Garba Gandu, explained that the new curriculum aims to equip students with essential skills and training for global competitiveness. It includes 15 newly introduced trade subjects for basic education.

The subjects encompass basic digital literacy, such as information technology, and vocational entrepreneurship skills like building and construction, plumbing, and tiling.

Additional subjects include hospitality skills such as hair styling and makeup, as well as services like construction, GSM repairs, satellite and CCTV installation and maintenance, and garment making, among others.
