Nicaragua cuts ties with Israel, condemning ‘Genocidal’ actions in Gaza

The Nicaraguan government has announced that it is severing diplomatic relations with Israel, condemning the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This decision, made by President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo, came in response to what they described as Israel’s “genocidal” actions against Palestinians in Gaza, which have reportedly resulted in over 42,000 deaths, including a high number of women and children.

Nicaragua’s Congress also passed a resolution on Friday, calling for action to mark the one-year anniversary of the Gaza conflict, which they stated now also affects Lebanon and poses risks to Syria, Yemen, and Iran. Murillo expressed that Nicaragua is standing against what she referred to as the “fascist” regime in Tel Aviv.

Israel initially launched its offensive on Gaza on October 7, following a series of attacks by Hamas, a Palestinian resistance movement, as a retaliation for increased Israeli actions in the West Bank. The Nicaraguan government’s decision reflects a growing trend of condemnation in Latin America, where leaders in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, and Chile have also criticized Israel’s actions and some have even cut diplomatic ties.

This is not the first time Nicaragua has severed relations with Israel. The country previously did so in 2010, also under Ortega’s leadership, and in 1982 during the Sandinista revolutionary government following its 1979 revolution.
