Police detain 5 motorcyclists over ASP’s death
The Lagos State Police Command has detained five motorcyclists in connection with the death of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who was reportedly on a rescue mission. The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Saturday.
According to Hundeyin, the police received a distress call around 1:40 a.m. on Saturday regarding a motorcyclist who had crashed into a trailer at WEMCO Junction, Mobile Road, in the PEN Cinema area of Agege. Upon arriving at the scene, the patrol team encountered a large group of commercial motorcyclists.
“While attempting to evacuate the truck involved in the incident, the patrol team was attacked by the motorcyclists, who were intent on torching the vehicle,” Hundeyin stated. The altercation resulted in serious injuries to the ASP, aged 46, who was struck in the head and died at the scene. The truck driver managed to escape unharmed.
The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to the Mainland General Hospital Mortuary in Yaba for autopsy. In addition to the five arrested motorcyclists, the police are conducting a manhunt for other suspects involved in the incident.
“We are committed to ensuring that justice is served in this case and are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event,” Hundeyin added.
