Remembering Sen. Bukar Abba Ibrahim on posthumous 75th birthday, by Yusuf Ali

It’s been 236 days since the death of Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, the former governor of Yobe State, and an elder statesman who has left a lasting legacy in service to humanity and with humility. Today, he would have been 75.

He was born on 1st October, 1949 and died on 4th February, 2024 after a protracted illness in Mecca, Saudi Arabia and buried in the Holy land.

The viral news of Bukar’s death was a shocker. At first, many were in disbelief, not until the former governor was buried the following day after prayers in the Saudi grand mosque Masjid Haram.

Today, we remember and celebrate the life, legacy, and enduring impact of an extraordinary leader, His Excellency Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, even as his soul continue to rest in Jannatul Firdaus.

Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim is an elder statesman of immense vision, dedication, and service to the nation, particularly to the people of Yobe State. He left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political and developmental landscape.

His tenure as Governor of Yobe State spanned three remarkable terms, during which his leadership brought about groundbreaking achievements in various sectors.

As the first civilian Governor of Yobe State, His Excellency laid the foundation for the development of the state in 1991. His administration made giant strides in infrastructure development, particularly in road networks, and public buildings, helping to connect rural communities and boost economic activities.

His passion for education was evident in the establishment of numerous primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, which empowered the youth and contributed significantly to the literacy and educational growth of the state.

He also prioritised healthcare, building new hospitals and upgrading existing facilities to improve access to quality medical services, particularly in rural areas.

In agriculture, His Excellency implemented laudable initiatives like the ‘Back to Farm Programme’ that supported farmers with inputs, machinery, and extension services, fostering agricultural development and food security.

His water supply projects improved access to clean water, addressing a key need in the state. Under his leadership, Yobe also experienced progress in housing and urban development, with urban renewal projects and affordable housing initiatives for civil servants on owner occupier basis.

Despite the challenges facing the northeastern region, Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim was a champion of peace and stability, ensuring security and fostering a conducive environment for growth and development throughout his tenure.

As a Senator, he continued his commitment to national progress, championing unity, education, and justice. His legacy of selfless service, humility, and impactful leadership remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come.

Though he is no longer with us, the legacy of His Excellency Bukar Abba Ibrahim remains vibrant, and we celebrate his life not with sorrow, but with pride in the monumental achievements he accomplished during his lifetime.

On this day, we remember a father, leader, mentor, and friend to many, whose memory lives on through the countless lives he touched.

May his gentle soul continue to rest in Jannatul Firdaus, and may his legacy continue to light our path towards a better Nigeria.
