Shock as Nigerian woman dies month after relocating to UK

The Nigerian community in the UK has been left devastated by the sudden death of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, who passed away just a month after arriving in Sunderland with her two children to join her husband, Jacob Okeniyi. Olubunmi, who arrived in the UK on September 16, 2024, succumbed to breast cancer on October 13, 2024.

Reports indicate that Mrs. Okeniyi had been battling the disease in Nigeria and sought treatment upon her arrival in the UK. Despite the doctors’ efforts, her condition was deemed terminal, leading to palliative care at home. Sadly, she passed away shortly after receiving routine care from her medical team.

Her death is the latest in a series of tragic losses within the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, raising concerns about the health and welfare of Nigerians who relocate abroad. Earlier this year, Saheed Wahab died a day after moving to the UK, and another Nigerian man suffered a heart attack two months after reuniting with his wife in Hull City.

In the wake of Olubunmi’s death, the Nigerian community in Sunderland has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses, raising £5,800 so far. Her husband and children remain in mourning as the family grapples with this profound loss.
