Showdown looms in Rivers as Wike’s faction allegedly mobilises youths to block council secretariats

A political showdown is brewing in Rivers State as the Nyesom Wike faction reportedly organizes a mobilization of 20 youths from each ward, promising them N15,000 each, to obstruct access to council secretariats and prevent Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration from entering. This strategy comes as Fubara plans to swear in newly elected local government chairpersons on Sunday at the Executive Council Chambers in Port Harcourt.

According to sources, there are fears that this plan could escalate the already tense political climate in the state. “A crisis is likely on Monday. Fubara will swear in the chairmen of local councils elected at the weekend, but the Wike group aims to block their access to the secretariats,” a source disclosed.

The state police command has confirmed that two explosions occurred during the local government elections. The first blast took place at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Secretariat along Aba Road, while the second exploded at the Obio/Akpor Local Government Secretariat. The police have begun investigations, collecting samples from both sites.

Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko reported that the first explosion occurred around 3:00 AM, damaging the APC Secretariat significantly, while the second explosion happened shortly after, with eyewitnesses alleging that a stick of dynamite was thrown from a vehicle.

As the political tensions rise, former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo has openly declared his support for Governor Fubara, denouncing Wike for alleged abuse of power. Dokubo claimed that Wike is using military resources against him, stating, “I have the capacity to contain them. Let them tell Wike to back off.”

In a warning to Wike’s faction, Dokubo emphasized, “Nigeria can not surrender to Wike. Rivers people will not surrender to Wike,” threatening potential retaliation if provoked. He also questioned Wike’s political influence, asserting, “Wike is nobody without the paraphernalia of the office.”
