State to ban sachet water, single-use plastics by 2025

The Lagos State Government has announced its plan to ban the use and circulation of sachet water, Styrofoam, and single-use plastics (SUPs) by January 2025.

This move is part of the government’s broader strategy to manage plastic waste, reduce disease spread, and promote a healthier, sustainable environment.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ workshop, the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the plan, emphasizing that the ban aligns with efforts to address plastic pollution in the state.

He highlighted that the government is determined to create long-term environmental benefits through the phased elimination of harmful packaging materials.

Despite the environmental benefits, stakeholders have called for a gradual implementation of the ban to ensure compliance and reduce the economic impact on businesses and consumers.

They believe a phased approach would help ease the transition during the current economic challenges faced by many residents.
