Student armed with gun attacks police station

Joshua Sarfo Korkpatey, a student at Ghana Secondary School, has been detained after assaulting a police station while armed.

The student allegedly attacked the Effiduasi Police Station on Monday, October 21.

According to reports, the suspect had previously been indefinitely suspended from Ghana Secondary School for stealing mattresses.

After being handed over to the police, he was granted police inquiry bail until the incident at the police station occurred.

According to ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, the Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, a student attempted to invade the police station, threatening the investigator handling his case, Lance Corporal Oppong Noah. This individual was armed with a metal bar and a locally manufactured firearm loaded with an A.A cartridge.

During his confinement, the suspect exhibited alarming behavior, banging on the door and demonstrating signs that suggested a potential mental health crisis. Consequently, he was referred for psychiatric evaluation to ascertain his mental state.

ASP Tetteh emphasized that further legal proceedings will depend on the results of this thorough mental assessment, highlighting the importance of understanding the suspect’s psychological condition in determining the next steps in the investigation and prosecution.

Such situations underscore the intersection of criminal behavior and mental health, necessitating a nuanced approach from law enforcement and mental health professionals alike.
