Students burn down Provost’s residence over ₦23m extortion claims
Angry students at the College of Health Sciences and Technology in Jega, Kebbi State, have set Provost Haruna Saidu-Sauwa’s residence on fire and vandalized his vehicle.
The protest stemmed from allegations that the college management extorted ₦23 million from students for index registration of 250 graduating students.
A source indicated that the issue arose from a newly introduced public health program, initially linked to Reproductive Health and the Public Health Association of Nigeria.
The college merged the program with the Environmental Health Department to obtain certification, resulting in a demand for an additional ₦65,000 from each student for index registration, in addition to the ₦30,000 already paid.
Accusing the management of extortion, students reacted violently by stoning vehicles and setting the provost’s residence ablaze. College staff fled in fear before security personnel arrived at the scene.
Kebbi Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, stated that more details will be provided once information from the Divisional Police Officer in Jega is received.
The ongoing crisis has raised concerns about the college’s commitment to ethical standards, putting its mission to produce skilled healthcare professionals under scrutiny.
