The death toll from a devastating tanker explosion in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State has tragically risen to 167, according to a statement made by state governor Umar Namadi on Thursday.

The governor disclosed this somber news while receiving a condolence visit from his Kano State counterpart, Abba Yusuf, at the Government House in Dutse.

“As of Thursday evening, 167 lives had been lost in the fire disaster,” Governor Namadi confirmed, expressing deep sorrow over the incident that has plunged the state into mourning.

In the wake of the explosion, 67 survivors are currently receiving medical treatment in various hospitals both within and outside Jigawa State. “We are doing everything possible to ensure the injured receive the best care available,” the governor stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of those affected.

The tragic event unfolded on Tuesday when a fuel tanker exploded in Majiya town. Reports suggest that many victims were attempting to scoop fuel from the wreckage when the explosion occurred.

A mass burial was held for the initial 147 victims who lost their lives in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. This incident has left families shattered and the local community in shock.

In a gesture of solidarity, the Kano State Government has pledged N100 million to support the victims and their families. Governor Namadi expressed gratitude for this generous contribution, stating, “We assure that the N100 million donation from Kano will be judiciously used to aid the victims of the unfortunate incident and their families.”

Governor Yusuf, present during the announcement, extended his condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. Kano State stands with Jigawa in this time of grief.”

The explosion has drawn widespread sympathy, with messages of condolence flooding in from across the nation and around the world. In response to the tragedy, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a full-scale investigation into the incident to uncover the cause of the explosion.

A statement from the agency read, “The team will assess the circumstances surrounding the crash and the explosion to identify causal factors and provide safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this devastating accident.”
