US stoking insecurity in Red Sea by backing Israeli regime – Iran

At the recent 82nd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), Iran’s representative, Pouria Kolivand, stated that the United States is the main source of insecurity in the Red Sea region.

He made this assertion while addressing accusations from several countries, particularly the US, regarding Iran’s role in maritime security.

Kolivand defended Iran’s commitment to international maritime obligations, asserting that the US’s support for Israel has created instability in the region. He criticized the claims made against Iran as “baseless,” emphasizing that the Islamic Republic adheres to its international commitments.

The MEPC meeting, held in London from September 30 to October 4, focused on various environmental issues, including strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. Notably, the Iranian delegation faced visa issues that prevented their full participation, leading them to protest the UK’s non-compliance with International Maritime Organization conventions regarding timely visa issuance.

The US and its allies have long accused Iran of aiding Yemeni forces in maritime operations targeting Israeli vessels in the Red Sea, a claim that Iran has consistently denied. These operations by Yemeni forces are seen as retaliation for Israel’s ongoing military actions against Palestinians, which have resulted in significant casualties.

Kolivand underscored the dangers posed by US and UK strikes in support of Israel, asserting that such actions threaten maritime security and shipping routes in the Red Sea. He reiterated that Yemeni military operations would continue in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza.
