Yemen’s Houthis vow more operations against Israel despite U.S.,British airstrikes

The Yemeni government has downplayed the significance of the recent US-British airstrikes on its territory, declaring that these attacks will not halt its ongoing operations in support of Palestine and Lebanon.

Hashem Sharaf El-Din, the spokesperson for Yemen’s government, issued a defiant statement on Friday, following the airstrikes that hit several areas across Yemen, including the capital Sana’a, as well as the provinces of Hudaydah, al-Bayda, and Dhamar.

Sharaf El-Din condemned the strikes as a “desperate attempt” to intimidate the Yemeni people, who have remained resolute in their stance against Israeli aggression. “Such attacks won’t scare off Yemen, which will remain steadfast against the enemy,” he stated, referring to the broader regional conflict involving Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon. The spokesperson reiterated that Yemen’s anti-Israel operations will not cease until Israeli hostilities in Gaza and Lebanon come to an end.

The airstrikes came shortly after large-scale protests in Yemen, where millions rallied in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and the Lebanese people. The Yemeni government has aligned itself with the Palestinian cause, and its forces have carried out numerous operations against Israel and its interests. These actions have included strikes on Israeli ships and vessels heading toward ports in the occupied territories.

Since the start of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, following the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm launched by Hamas on October 7, 2023, Yemen has escalated its operations against Israeli targets. The Hamas-led offensive was in response to decades of Israeli occupation and violence against Palestinians. Israel’s retaliatory actions in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of over 41,000 Palestinians, including women and children, with tens of thousands more injured. Thousands are still missing under the rubble of destroyed buildings.

Yemen’s involvement in the broader conflict is part of its alignment with the “Axis of Resistance,” a coalition of nations and groups that oppose Israeli occupation. Yemen’s Houthi movement has carried out operations in solidarity with Palestinians and Lebanese Hezbollah, targeting Israeli military and civilian sites.

The ongoing conflict has also spilled over into Lebanon, where Israeli strikes have killed hundreds of civilians since October 2023. Lebanon’s Hezbollah has been responding to Israeli aggression with its own retaliatory strikes against Israeli military positions.

Sharaf El-Din’s statement makes clear that Yemen remains committed to supporting its regional allies and will not be dissuaded by foreign interventions, such as the recent US and British airstrikes. Despite the heavy bombardment of its territory, Yemenis continue to rally in support of the Palestinian and Lebanese people, emphasizing their determination to resist Israeli actions.

The US and British governments have justified their strikes as part of efforts to safeguard navigation in the region, but Yemen insists that its actions are in defense of oppressed people in Palestine and Lebanon. As the conflict continues to escalate, it is clear that Yemen’s involvement in the regional struggle against Israel is set to intensify.
