Yobe is committed to address impact of floods in communities – Dr Goje

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to alleviating the impact of floods on communities across the state.
In an exclusive interview with Neptune Prime correspondent, Dr. Mohammed Goje, YOSEMA’s Executive Secretary, shed more light into the agency’s efforts to address the devastating floods.
Dr. Goje disclosed that YOSEMA has distributed numerous food and non-food items to affected communities, ensuring timely intervention to alleviate their suffering.
This comes after Governor Mai Mala Buni allocated ₦100 million as relief funds to flood victims in Yobe State, which has been severely affected, with approximately 11,999 households impacted, 29 deaths, and 274 people injured across 323 communities.

Neptune Prime: What measures has YOSEMA taken to support flood victims in Yobe State?
Dr. Goje: We have distributed numerous food and non-food items to affected communities, ensuring timely intervention to alleviate their suffering. The administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni is working round the clock to cushion the effect of floods, and we are working tirelessly to provide succour to affected families. Our relief efforts are designed to address the immediate needs of victims, providing them with essential items to restart their lives, a practical examples are Karasuwa, Nangere, Fune, Gujba and other LGAs.
Neptune Prime: Can you elaborate on the relief efforts in Karasuwa Local Government Area?
Dr. Goje: Yes. Governor Mai Mala Buni’s Cash Stimulus was distributed to flood victims in Karasuwa LGA in September. Registered victims received ₦30,000 each, in addition to other support. This financial assistance aims to empower victims to recover from the devastating impact of the floods. Our team worked closely with local authorities to identify and verify beneficiaries, ensuring transparency and accountability in the distribution process.
Neptune Prime: How do you assess the impact of the floods on communities?
Dr. Goje: Relief efforts are not just about providing aid, but also about restoring hope. We recognise the trauma and displacement caused by the floods, and our response is tailored to address both physical and emotional needs. Providing essential items and financial support, we are helping victims rebuild their lives and regain a sense of normalcy. Our collaboration with stakeholders, including local governments and humanitarian organisations, has enhanced our response capabilities.
Neptune Prime: What role has Action Against Hunger (ACF) played in YOSEMA’s relief efforts?
Dr. Goje: ACF’s support has been out of this world. We appreciate their partnership in responding to the needs of flood victims. Together, we have supported 359 households affected by flooding in eight Potiskum LGA communities. ACF’s expertise in humanitarian response has complemented our efforts, enabling us to reach more victims and provide comprehensive support.
Neptune Prime: What items were distributed to beneficiaries?
Dr. Goje: Each household received essential items, including cement, soap, sanitary pads, kettles, aquatabs, water basins, jerricans, mattresses, cooking pots, mosquito nets, and blankets. These items address basic needs, such as shelter, hygiene, and food preparation. Our distribution strategy prioritises the most vulnerable households, ensuring equity and fairness in the relief process.

Dr. Goje: We’ll continue supporting more communities as directed by Governor Mai Mala Buni. The Yobe State Government prioritises the welfare of citizens, especially during times of crisis. Our ongoing assessments identify emerging needs, informing our response strategies. We’re committed to empowering affected communities with necessary resources, facilitating their recovery and resilience.
