Young man dies inside grave during fortification exercise
An Onitsha-based businessman, Chikwado Eze, has died after spending an hour in a grave in Inyi, a community within the Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to reports, Eze, a native of the Ugbaike community in the same council area, had obtained a visa to travel abroad for his business but sought ritual fortification to enhance his prospects for success.
It was reported that Eze consulted a native doctor in Inyi, who insisted that, among other requirements, he must be buried in a grave for one and a half hours to receive adequate fortification for his upcoming business trip.
It was further reported that the deceased had gone to the native doctor with his biological father, Uwakwe, on the fateful day for the rituals. After some merriment, the native doctor asked the father and other guests to step outside so that the rituals could be performed.
According to sources, Eze was then lowered into the grave and covered with earth for the stipulated duration of one hour and thirty minutes.
However, trouble arose when he was exhumed; instead of being fortified, he appeared weak and was covered in a pool of sweat. Realizing the danger, the native doctor began incantations in an attempt to revive him, but to no avail.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that Eze was rushed to a hospital at the local government headquarters in Ogrute, where doctors pronounced him dead. Both his father and the native doctor have since been arrested by the police for interrogation.
Additionally, it was reported that the father, who had previously been ostracized by the Ugbaike community for alleged involvement in dangerous charms, denied forcing his son to visit the native doctor. He claimed, “I had already bought all the items before inviting him for the rituals.”
