Nigerian-born, Kemi Badenoch, elected leader of UK’s conservative party, sets historic milestone

Nigerian-born Kemi Badenoch has been elected as the leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, marking a historic milestone as the first Black leader of a major British political party. She triumphed over her rival, Robert Jenrick, with a resounding 53,806 votes against his 41,388, capturing 57% of the vote from party members. At 44 years old, Badenoch will now lead the Conservative Party as it faces the challenge of rebuilding from opposition after its recent defeat by the Labour Party in July’s general election.

Badenoch’s ascent to leadership has been hailed as a breakthrough moment for diversity and inclusion in British politics. In a congratulatory message, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described her election as “a proud moment” for the UK, recognising the significance of her achievement in shaping British history.

During her acceptance speech, Badenoch conveyed her deep honour and expressed a strong commitment to revitalising the Conservative Party. “This is an enormous honour, and I am here to rebuild our party with a fresh perspective,” she said. “The time has come to tell the truth and to be honest about the mistakes made in recent years.” Acknowledging the need for the party to regain public trust, she added, “We must confront our losses and work to make the Conservative Party the trusted choice for British voters once again.”

Badenoch was also gracious in her appreciation of the contributions from previous leaders. She commended former leader Rishi Sunak for his dedication during challenging times and acknowledged Robert Jenrick, her opponent, for his valuable role and pledged to include him in the party’s future endeavours.

Kemi Badenoch has been known for her no-nonsense approach and her advocacy for core conservative values. Throughout her political career, she has focused on issues like national sovereignty, economic revival, and preserving British cultural identity. Before her leadership bid, she served as Business Secretary, where she made a name for herself as an outspoken defender of conservative ideals.
