Tinubu arrives Brazil for G20 Summit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the G20 Heads of State and Government Summit.
The summit, running from today through tomorrow (Tuesday), is themed “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” with a focus on sustainable development across three key areas: economic, social, and environmental, as well as the reform of global governance.
President Tinubu landed in Brazil early on Monday, at around 3 a.m. Nigerian time, and was welcomed by Ambassador Breno Costa of Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations.
Accompanying the President are Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development; and Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity.
Also accompanying President Tinubu on the trip is Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.
During the summit, the President is expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines to further Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is hosting the 2024 G20 Summit, having assumed the group’s rotating presidency on December 21, 2023. His tenure will conclude on November 30.
President Tinubu’s participation in the summit follows an invitation extended by President Lula, which was conveyed by Carlos Areias, the Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, during a meeting on August 29, when he presented his Letter of Credence.
The 2024 G20 Summit will be attended by representatives from 19 member countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the UK, and the US. In addition, representatives from the African Union and the European Union have been invited.
