Biden authorises Ukraine to use US-supplied long-range missiles inside Russia

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

For the first time, the United States, under President Joe Biden, has permitted Ukraine to use US-supplied long-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia, according to reports from Reuters and the Associated Press.

This decision signals a significant shift in US policy regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, coming as President Biden prepares to leave office.

President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to reduce US support for Ukraine and push for an end to the war, adding urgency to the current administration’s actions.

The White House has not issued any official comment on the development.

Months after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request to use US weapons for deep strikes, Ukraine plans to execute its first long-range attacks in the coming days.

Sources report that Ukraine will employ ATACMS rockets, capable of reaching targets up to 190 miles (306 km) away, to counteract escalating threats, including North Korea’s decision to deploy thousands of troops to support Russia.

The potential strikes are seen as a strategic move to bolster Ukraine’s position ahead of future ceasefire negotiations. However, some US officials remain sceptical about whether these long-range attacks will significantly alter the course of the war.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions in Washington. Some congressional Republicans have urged Biden to relax restrictions on US weapons use by Ukraine, while others caution against further escalation.

Russia has already warned that allowing Ukraine to expand the scope of US-supplied weaponry would be perceived as a severe escalation of the conflict.

With Trump’s incoming administration advocating for reduced US involvement, it remains unclear whether this policy will endure. Biden’s decision could have lasting implications for US-Ukraine relations and the broader geopolitical landscape.

As one source noted, “Permitting long-range strikes is a calculated risk—one that could shift the balance at the negotiating table, but also risks provoking a strong response from Moscow.”
