Army investigates Major General for assaulting couple in Abuja

The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation after a viral video showed a Major General and soldiers allegedly assaulting a couple in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The incident reportedly occurred when the soldiers stopped the couple for “unlawfully overtaking” their convoy.

The video shows the military personnel attacking the couple, handcuffing them, and taking them to the Gwarimpa Police Station.

Reports indicate that the soldiers instructed the police to detain the couple indefinitely.

In a statement on Wednesday morning, Army Spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu confirmed that the Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Olufemi Oluyede, had ordered an investigation into the incident.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to a viral audio-visual recording circulating on social media platforms, purportedly showing a senior Army officer and two other soldiers in an altercation with a man and woman within the Abuja metropolis.

“The circumstances leading to this incident are not clear at the moment.”

“However, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an immediate investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding this altercation.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to serving and protecting all law-abiding Nigerians, as outlined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Therefore, we assure the public that thorough diligence will be applied to reach a fair and conclusive outcome on this matter.”
