Kebbi Polytechnic reports decline in student enrollment since 2014

Kebbi State Polytechnic, Dakingari, has expressed concern over the low enrollment of students into the institution.

The Deputy Rector, Sa’idu Aliyu-Dankolo, shared this information on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the Kebbi State House of Assembly in Birnin Kebbi, where he led the polytechnic’s management team and Government Council members.

Aliyu-Dankolo explained that the visit aimed to inform the assembly about the institution’s primary challenge.

He stated that low student enrollment remains a major challenge for the institution, despite the accreditation of additional courses.

Among the accredited programs are Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Science Laboratory, Library and Information Science, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, which he believes should be appealing to students.

“The low enrollment of students is threatening the development of the Polytechnic,” he said. “We, therefore, seek the support of the House members to encourage people from their constituencies to enroll at the institution, helping to reduce this issue and contribute to the overall growth of the Polytechnic and the education sector.”

In response, the Speaker of the House, Mohammed Usman-Zuru, represented by his Deputy, Muhammad Sama’ila-Bagudo, reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to addressing the challenge. He also urged the polytechnic’s management to identify the root causes of the low enrollment to develop effective solutions.

The Polytechnic was established in 2014 by the administration of former Governor Saidu Dakingari to provide greater access to higher education for the state’s indigent population.
