‘Stop making jest of other presidents’, Osinbajo’s ex-aide advises Obasanjo

A former spokesman for ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, has urged former President Olusegun Obasanjo to cease making jest of other presidents. Akande’s comments came in response to Obasanjo’s recent remarks during a lecture at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University on Saturday.

In his lecture, Obasanjo had commented on the dire state of Nigeria, pointing to the pervasive corruption and immorality contributing to the nation’s chaos and underdevelopment. He attributed the country’s issues to these challenges and stated, “Nigeria’s situation is bad… The more the immorality and corruption of a nation, the more the nation sinks into chaos, insecurity, conflict, discord, division, disunity, depression, youth restiveness, confusion, violence, and underdevelopment.”

Obasanjo’s criticism extended to the current administration, referring to it as one that has brought Nigeria to a “failing state status.” He also noted that despite the nation’s numerous issues, there is still hope for change.

However, Akande, reacting to the former president’s comments, emphasized the need for Obasanjo to offer more constructive criticism. Speaking on Inside Sources on Channels Television, Akande stated, “Former presidents, such as General Obasanjo, should do better than merely making jest of other presidents.” He argued that Nigeria’s problems stem from deeper political leadership issues, which, in his view, contribute to the current crisis.

Akande stressed that while Nigeria suffers from political leadership challenges, the root cause is a more profound issue that requires attention.

The exchange has sparked ongoing discussions about the state of Nigeria’s leadership and governance.
