Police confirm 5 deaths, 20 missing in boat accident

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

A boat collision in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State has left five people dead, six injured, and 20 others missing.

The incident occurred as two speedboats, carrying family members returning from a burial ceremony, collided and toppled, plunging passengers into the water.

Delta State Police Command spokesman Edafe Bright confirmed the tragedy, stating, “Six injured persons are receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Warri.”

According to the statement, many passengers were reportedly not wearing life jackets, exacerbating the impact of the accident.

This disaster adds to a troubling series of boat mishaps in recent months.

In October, over 300 passengers were aboard a capsized boat on the Gbajibo River in Mokwa, Niger State, causing multiple casualties.

Similarly, in September, a boat carrying over 50 passengers capsized in Niger State, killing 24 individuals headed to their farms.

These incidents highlight growing concerns about overloading, poor enforcement of safety regulations, and a lack of life-saving measures on Nigeria’s waterways.
