Reps confirms Oluyede’s appointment as COAS
On Thursday, the House of Representatives confirmed the appointment of Olufemi Oluyede as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
Although the constitution does not require the House of Representatives to confirm such appointments, lawmakers approved the recommendation of its ad-hoc committee on the confirmation and screening of the Acting Chief of Army Staff, thereby confirming Lieutenant General Oluyede’s appointment as the substantive COAS.
Babajimi Benson, chairman of the committee, presented the report and affirmed that Lt. Gen. Oluyede had met all necessary qualifications.
Oluyede was appointed in October by President Bola Tinubu in an acting capacity, following the illness of former army chief Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5. The president then wrote to the National Assembly requesting Oluyede’s confirmation as the permanent army chief, praising him for his dedication to the country’s security.

On Wednesday, Oluyede appeared before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Defence and Army, where he vowed to address Nigeria’s security challenges if his confirmation was approved. Accompanied by senior military officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa, Oluyede expressed his honor at being considered for the role, pledging to collaborate with the National Assembly and other stakeholders to bring lasting peace to Nigeria.
Oluyede noted his extensive experience at senior operational and management levels within the Nigerian Army over the past five years, acknowledging both the army’s successes and setbacks during that time. He described his nomination as an opportunity to lead the Nigerian Army toward positive change and greater fulfillment of its constitutional duties.
He concluded by assuring the committee that, if confirmed, he would strive to justify the confidence placed in him by President Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the Nigerian people.
