Champions Manchester City suffer 1st league defeat against Bournemouth
In a stunning upset, Manchester City’s 32-match unbeaten run in the Premier League came to a halt with a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday, allowing Liverpool to reclaim the top spot in the league.
The Cherries struck first through Antoine Semenyo, who found the net just nine minutes into the match, capitalising on a well-placed cross from Milos Kerkez. Bournemouth’s momentum continued in the second half, with Evanilson doubling the lead in the 64th minute, again connecting with a precise Kerkez delivery.
City’s frustration grew as they struggled to find rhythm, hindered by injuries that left them without several key players. Despite dominating possession, they lacked the clinical edge typically associated with Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, a late surge saw City claw back a goal when Josko Gvardiol scored with a towering header from an Ilkay Gundogan cross, making it 2-1 with just eight minutes left on the clock. The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser, with Erling Haaland coming close deep into stoppage time, but his shot struck the post from point-blank range, sealing City’s fate.
Guardiola, reflecting on the match, noted the impact of injuries on his squad. “We have players playing through pain, and that’s tough,” he said. “Bournemouth played well, but we have to be better.”
Despite the loss, City’s defeat was softened by Arsenal’s own setback, as they were beaten 1-0 at Newcastle. City now sits two points behind Liverpool, who secured their place at the top of the table with a comeback victory against Brighton.
Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, City will need to bounce back quickly, focusing on their upcoming fixtures to regain their momentum. Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s impressive performance continues to boost their confidence as they look to climb further up the league table.
