Late COAS Lagbaja, to be buried Friday
The late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Taoreed Lagbaja, will be laid to rest in Abuja on Friday, November 11, according to his elder brother, Moshood Lagbaja.
He shared this information during a condolence visit by the St. Charles Grammar School Osogbo Old Boys Association (SCOBA) to the Lagbaja family in Osogbo, Osun State.
Moshood Lagbaja assured the SCOBA delegation that his late brother would receive a dignified burial in Abuja, though he clarified that the military was unable to deliver the body to the family.
The SCOBA delegation, led by the association’s first vice president, Adesina Salami, delivered a letter of condolence to the family. The letter was signed by SCOBA’s general secretary, Leye Odetoyinbo, and the global president, Tade Adekunle.
Salami, speaking on behalf of the association, described the late COAS as an exceptional individual, a proud alumnus of St. Charles Grammar School, and a distinguished military leader who served Nigeria with unwavering commitment.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had announced the death of General Lagbaja on Wednesday, November 6. He was 56 years old at the time of his passing.

In October, the Nigerian Army dismissed rumors about the death of General Taoreed Lagbaja. The speculation began with a tweet by Jackson Ude, a former presidential aide and social media commentator, which quickly went viral.
In response, Army spokesperson Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu took to X (formerly Twitter) to urge Nigerians to disregard the rumor.
He clarified that Lagbaja was on official leave at the time and that Major General Abdulsalami Ibrahim, the Army’s Chief of Policy and Plans, had been designated to act in his place. Nwachukwu emphasized that Lagbaja’s absence had not affected the Army’s operations.
However, on October 30, The ICIR reported that President Bola Tinubu appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede to temporarily take over Lagbaja’s duties. A statement from the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that Oluyede would act in the position until Lagbaja, who was reportedly indisposed, returned to Nigeria.
Lagbaja’s military career began in 1987 when he enrolled in the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). He passed away on November 6, 2024, at the age of 56. He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.
