Husband seeks justice after ATBU lecturer allegedly harasses wife

The husband of an Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) student, Jafaru Buba, has urged the institution to investigate allegations of sexual harassment against a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Buba, speaking to journalists in Bauchi, revealed that his lawyers had submitted a petition to the ATBU Vice-Chancellor, the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The petition, filed by the student’s lawyer, Barrister Mohammed Sani, claims the lecturer repeatedly harassed the student by inviting her to his office and sending inappropriate WhatsApp messages, despite knowing she was married.

When rebuffed, the lecturer allegedly threatened to fail the student and ruin her chances of graduating from the M.Eng. programme. The complainant’s lawyer, Barrister Mohammed Sani, provided WhatsApp chats as evidence and called for a thorough investigation to prevent similar misconduct.
ATBU’s Public Relations Officer, Zailani Bappah, said he was unaware of the case but would verify the matter with university management.
The case, filed at Bauchi State High Court 7, has been adjourned to November 27, 2027, for further hearing.
