INTERPOL General Assembly: Gaidam highlights Nigeria’s commitment to global security

During the 92nd INTERPOL General Assembly in Glasgow, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam CON, Minister of Police Affairs, led the Nigerian delegation in a pivotal side meeting with outgoing INTERPOL Secretary General, Jürgen Stock.

This meeting underscored Nigeria’s ongoing dedication to enhancing global security through proactive partnerships and cross-border collaboration.

Senator Gaidam emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to combating transnational crime and terrorism, expressing the nation’s eagerness to strengthen ties with INTERPOL and other international organisations.

He outlined plans to enhance resource, technology, and intelligence-sharing efforts to tackle pressing issues such as terrorism, cybercrime, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.

The Senator reiterated Nigeria’s active role in international security initiatives, highlighting its steadfast position on maintaining peace and stability within its borders and beyond.

The outgoing INTERPOL Secretary General, Jürgen Stock, commended Nigeria’s contributions to international law enforcement, acknowledging the significant influence of Nigerian leadership within INTERPOL.

He noted the crucial role Nigeria’s experience and resources play in addressing global threats, particularly in Africa and surrounding regions.

Stock encouraged Nigeria to continue its leadership role, focusing on capacity-building, training, and resource-sharing among member nations.

The side meeting, coinciding with the General Assembly, reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for INTERPOL’s mission and its commitment to collaborating with member states to foster a safer global environment.

Both leaders expressed optimism for future collaborations that will further Nigeria’s and INTERPOL’s efforts in combating organised crime and improving security across international borders.

Additionally, Senator Gaidam articulated Nigeria’s position on proposed amendments to INTERPOL’s constitution, stressing the importance of international law enforcement collaboration while adapting INTERPOL’s framework to meet evolving global security challenges.

The Nigerian delegation, which included Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun and other senior officials, also engaged in bilateral meetings with representatives from Europol and various countries. By participating in these discussions, Nigeria continues to demonstrate its commitment to international cooperation in law enforcement and its proactive approach to addressing global security threats.
