Iran: Trump’s victory an opportunity for US to revise ‘wrong policies’

Iran has stated it will judge the new US government based on its policies and actions, following Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election on Wednesday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeili Baghaei said Thursday that Trump’s win presents an opportunity for the US to reassess its past “wrong policies,” particularly referencing the 2018 US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and the subsequent sanctions imposed on Iran.

“We have bitter experiences with the policies of previous US administrations,” Baghaei said, adding that the election results offer a chance to “review and revise” these approaches.

However, Baghaei emphasized that the outcome of the US election is of little concern to Iran. “The choice of the American president is the responsibility of the American people,” he said. “What matters to Iran is the performance of the US government.”

Iran’s government spokeswoman, Fatemeh Mohajerani, echoed this sentiment, stating that Iran sees no significant difference between Trump and his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris.

“Iran’s policies remain unchanged regardless of who is elected in the US,” she stated. “The election of the US president has no real impact on us. Our strategy is already set, and we’re ready for any new sanctions.”

Mohajerani further emphasized, “We don’t see a meaningful difference between Trump and Harris. In fact, sanctions have only strengthened Iran’s internal resilience, and we are fully capable of handling any additional pressure.”

In a surprising political comeback with far-reaching implications, Donald Trump was officially declared the 47th President of the United States on Wednesday, securing a clear majority of Electoral College votes. Trump won 295 electoral votes, while Kamala Harris, his Democratic rival, garnered 226. This marks Trump’s return to the White House nearly four years after his loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
