Police in Bauchi report major successes against ilegal firearms, crime (Pictures & video)

In a recent press briefing at the State Police Command Headquarters, Commissioner of Police Auwal Musa Muhammad detailed significant advancements in combating illegal firearms and criminal activities within Bauchi State.

This effort aligns with directives from the 22nd Indigenous Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, aimed at fostering a safer environment for all citizens.

“Through collaborative operations with sister security agencies, we have made considerable strides in seizing illegal firearms and suppressing criminal activities, particularly in our vulnerable border communities,” CP Muhammad stated.

The commissioner highlighted the successful confiscation of various illegal arms in regions such as Alkaleri, Ningi, and Toro Local Government Areas.

On October 18, police acted on actionable intelligence, leading to the arrest of Abdullahi Ibrahim, a 42-year-old male found in possession of two AK-47 rifles and 343 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.

Ibrahim claimed he obtained the firearms from his deceased uncle for protection, stating, “I was informed of the illegal nature of the firearms but felt it was necessary for our safety.” Despite his claims, he will face charges upon completion of the investigation.

In another notable operation, police engaged suspected kidnappers in Ningi Local Government Area, resulting in the neutralisation of six armed individuals. The police recovered two AK-49 rifles, one FNC rifle, and a locally made single-barrel gun during the encounter.

“Our operatives demonstrated superior firepower, and we are proud of their swift action in neutralising threats to our communities,” CP Muhammad remarked.

The command has also initiated a firearms mop-up operation, successfully recovering illegal weapons from public spaces, including a fabricated AK-47 and several cut-to-size guns. The proactive measures taken by the police are aimed at reducing the prevalence of illegal firearms in the state.

On October 25, the body of Damina Lamba was discovered in a bush area, showing signs of violence. Following this discovery, police swiftly apprehended three suspects on October 30, identified as Abdu Lamba, Ruwa Aliyu, and Rakiya Ya’u, all residents of Wuro Dangogo.

During interrogation, they confessed to being hired by Rakiya Ya’u to carry out the act against her father-in-law, whom she accused of practicing witchcraft. “This tragic incident underscores the need for increased vigilance and community cooperation,” CP Muhammad stated.

In a separate incident involving armed robbery, police responded to reports of a blockade between Mararraba and Kumbil village in Alkaleri LGA. Officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrested Umar Sanda, a 25-year-old male, after he and his accomplices severed a victim’s hand during the robbery.

Following an investigation, another suspect, Aliyu Alh. Korau, was arrested on October 31, with both suspects confessing to their involvement in the crime.

CP Muhammad concluded the briefing by expressing gratitude to the citizens of Bauchi for their continued support and collaboration. “These achievements reflect our unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order in the state. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly to enhance the safety of our communities.”
