Stop castigating leaders, God will deal with them – Sultan
The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Mohammad Abubakar II, has called on Nigerians to stop criticizing their leaders, encouraging them to let God handle matters as He sees fit.
He stressed that both good and bad times are temporary and urged continued prayers for leaders and the nation.
Speaking at the Regional Conference on Climate Change-Induced Conflicts in Northern Nigeria, organized by the Kaduna State Bureau of Interfaith in partnership with International Alert, the Sultan reminded leaders of their accountability on the Day of Resurrection, emphasizing that they will stand alone before God.
He also cautioned religious leaders against misleading their followers for personal gain, noting that many view them as saviors.
The Sultan encouraged worshippers to focus on their faith and intensify prayers for the country, stating, “No matter how difficult it is, ease will come.”
He reassured attendees that despite current challenges, nothing lasts forever and that they should pray for their leaders rather than criticize them, trusting that God will ultimately address their actions.

“You are on your own, as I always say. Each of us will ultimately stand alone. Let us be mindful of our actions and pray for our country. We are fortunate—travel to other countries and you will see. Yes, we have our challenges, but nothing lasts forever. With hard work and dedication, we can build a better nation.
“The North faces significant issues, including a lack of awareness about climate change, as well as poverty and insecurity—challenges that were once foreign to a region known for its progress and peace.
“This gathering serves as a unifying moment for us, a family in the North. There are many misunderstandings and attempts to misrepresent us, often fueled by those who seek to divide us. They recognize the strength of the North, which is respected not only in Nigeria but around the world.
“If we stand united, we can overcome any obstacle. Together, we can foster a more prosperous community. That’s why many negative comments are made about issues that we know are untrue, aimed at sowing division among us,” he stated.
In his address, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Most Reverend Dr. D.C. Okoh, acknowledged climate change as a pressing reality in the North, calling it a humanitarian crisis that demands immediate action. He urged the need to tackle all sources of conflict, including poverty, inequality, and limited access to resources.
He also highlighted the importance of educating the public about the effects of climate change and the necessity of environmental stewardship. Echoing the Sultan’s sentiments, he called on leaders to speak the truth within their communities, affirming that Nigeria, a nation rich in religious conviction, can only thrive through prayer and divine guidance.
Governor Uba Sani added that the Kaduna State Government has implemented proactive measures to address climate change and its consequences.
“We have developed a Policy on Climate Change to safeguard the future of our environment and our people. The Policy outlines our vision for a climate-resilient Kaduna State, detailing objectives, strategies, and targets for key areas such as sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, waste management, water resource management, and biodiversity preservation, among others,” he said.
He further commended the Bureau for organizing the event on climate change.
