Ibori’s daughter, 4 LP lawmakers defect to APC

Four members of the Labour Party (LP) in the House of Representatives have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday. The lawmakers who joined the APC are Tochukwu Okere (Imo), Donatus Mathew (Kaduna), Bassey Akiba (Cross River), and Iyawe Esosa (Edo).

Additionally, Erthiatake Ibori-Suenu, the daughter of former Delta State Governor James Ibori, also left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the APC.

Matthew, who represents Kaura Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, confirmed the move, stating that his decision to switch to the APC was based on conviction.

When asked if his defection had the support of his constituency, Matthew, who made history in 2023 as the first commercial motorcycle rider to win a parliamentary election, responded, “You can’t simply base decisions on the views of the entire constituency, as people have varying levels of understanding.”

He continued, “I am making this decision based on conviction. Whether people like it or not, there are individuals within the constituency who believe this defection is the right move, while others remain skeptical and are waiting to see the outcome.”

The lawmakers’ letters of defection to the APC were read out on the floor of the House of Representatives by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on Thursday.
