FG Dispels Rumours: XEC COVID-19 variant not present in Nigeria
The Federal Government has confirmed that the newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, reported in Australia and several European countries, has not been found in Nigeria.
In a statement, Kachollum Daju, a representative of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, clarified that a recently leaked letter was merely a precautionary measure and not meant to incite panic.
The XEC variant, identified in 29 countries, is causing global concern due to its rapid spread and potential public health impact. With the festive season increasing international travel, the ministry has urged hospitals nationwide to remain vigilant and enhance monitoring protocols to prevent its entry into the country.

In a December 5 letter signed by Dr O.N. Anuma, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, hospitals were directed to activate alert systems and maintain a high index of suspicion for patients presenting with COVID-like symptoms. The letter stressed the importance of timely data sharing and inter-agency collaboration to mitigate risks.
The government also emphasised the need for public health measures, including awareness campaigns, as part of a proactive strategy to safeguard Nigeria against potential outbreaks.
This announcement comes as the global health community remains on high alert, with experts urging nations to adopt robust strategies to combat emerging COVID-19 variants.
