France commits to strengthening NDLEA collaboration in combating drug trafficking

The French government has reiterated its commitment to deepening collaboration with Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

French Police Attaché Phillipe Crespo gave this assurance on Saturday during a courtesy visit to NDLEA’s national headquarters in Abuja. The visit marked the conclusion of special operations training for NDLEA’s Strike Force Unit at the agency’s academy in Jos—the third such training facilitated by France in two years.

Crespo commended the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), for fostering a culture of collaboration and welcoming international partnerships. He noted the far-reaching impact of NDLEA’s operations, which have successfully disrupted drug consignments destined for Europe and other regions.

“The agency’s interdiction efforts not only safeguard Nigerian communities but also contribute to global security by preventing illicit drugs from reaching foreign shores,” Crespo said. He proposed formalising the collaboration through a memorandum of understanding in the coming year.

In his response, Marwa expressed gratitude to the French government for its unwavering support and highlighted the importance of international cooperation in tackling the global drug problem.

“I recall visiting RAID headquarters in France in 2022, where I requested this type of training. I am thrilled to see how promptly and consistently this has been implemented,” Marwa said.

He emphasised the shared benefits of the growing partnership, noting the alignment between Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and French President Emmanuel Macron in fostering bilateral relations. “This collaboration extends beyond drug law enforcement, strengthening ties between our governments and nations for mutual benefit,” he added.

Advancing the Fight Against Drug Cartels

Marwa underscored the necessity of global partnerships to combat drug cartels, whose activities threaten public health and security worldwide. “Every expertise and resource we acquire is vital in confronting this menace,” he concluded.

The visit and ongoing collaboration reflect a significant step forward in curbing the scourge of illicit drugs and reinforcing international efforts to tackle this global challenge.
