The 2030 FIFA World Cup, set to span three continents, has sparked alarm over its environmental impact as football teams and fans will travel across the globe for matches.
FIFA is expected to announce the hosts for the 2030 and 2034 tournaments on Wednesday, with a dramatic expansion in geographic reach, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions.
Morocco, Spain, and Portugal are bidding jointly for the 2030 tournament, while Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will each host a match to mark the World Cup’s 100th anniversary. Saudi Arabia is the sole candidate for the 2034 tournament.
Guillaume Gouze from the University of Limoges stated that FIFA has a “moral responsibility” to consider climate concerns, criticizing the tournament’s “ecological aberration” in its current format. Benja Faecks of Carbon Market Watch echoed this sentiment, calling the 2030 tournament an “unfortunate geographic choice,” as the vast distances between host cities will necessitate extensive air travel for teams and fans.
FIFA aims to make football more accessible globally, but critics like David Gogishvili from the University of Lausanne argue that the environmental cost is too high. The expanded format of the 2026 World Cup, with 48 teams, will further intensify these issues, raising concerns about increased waste, travel, and resource demands.
Despite FIFA’s claim that most games will be played in neighboring countries with good transport links, the environmental challenges remain significant.
Additionally, the controversial sponsorship deal with Saudi Aramco has raised human rights and environmental concerns, with over 100 female footballers calling for its cancellation.
Experts suggest that FIFA should implement stricter policies, such as avoiding awarding the World Cup to cities requiring extensive new construction and encouraging train travel for fans. However, such measures may clash with FIFA’s financial goals.
Football fans, increasingly conscious of environmental issues, are questioning the sustainability of the 2030 World Cup. While some argue for a more localized tournament, others believe the passion for the sport will drive fans to overcome the environmental and financial costs of traveling across continents.
