Billionaire musician Jay-Z to face trial for alleged rape of 13-year-old girl

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

A lawsuit filed on Sunday accuses music moguls Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of raping a 13-year-old girl at an after-party following the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2000. The lawsuit, an updated complaint in a civil case against Combs, claims the two stars assaulted the girl while others at the party allegedly failed to intervene.

“Another celebrity stood by and watched as Combs and Carter took turns assaulting the minor. Many others were present at the after-party, but did nothing to stop the assault,” the complaint reads. It further alleges, “Carter has been with Combs during many such instances described herein. Both perpetrators must face justice.”

Jay-Z, identified as “Celebrity A” in the initial filing, denied the allegations in a strongly worded statement posted on X via his label, Roc Nation.

“My lawyer received a blackmail attempt, called a demand letter, from a ‘lawyer’ named Tony Buzbee. What he had calculated was the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle. No sir, it had the opposite effect! It made me want to expose you for the fraud you are,” the statement read.

He continued, “These allegations are so feature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not Whoeverone!! Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree? These alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were the case.”

Tony Buzbee, the attorney representing the plaintiff, responded, telling AFP, “The pleading speaks for itself. This is a very serious matter that will be litigated in court.”

Meanwhile, Sean “Diddy” Combs faces separate charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, with federal prosecutors accusing him of orchestrating drug-fueled sex parties and coercing women through threats and violence. Combs, who has pleaded not guilty, is set to face a criminal trial starting May 5, 2025.

The legal battles come amidst a wave of lawsuits against Combs, with attorney Buzbee stating that over 100 alleged victims plan to take legal action.

Jay-Z, 55, is a billionaire entrepreneur and music producer, widely known for his career as a rapper and his marriage to pop icon Beyoncé. Both Jay-Z and Diddy vehemently deny the accusations.
