Bayern Munich suffer 1st league loss under coach Vincent Kompany
Bayern Munich suffered their first Bundesliga loss under coach Vincent Kompany, going down 2-1 to Mainz on Saturday.
The loss allowed defending champions Bayer Leverkusen, who triumphed 2-0 at Augsburg, to reduce Bayern’s lead at the top of the table to just four points.
Mainz took full advantage of Bayern’s weakened squad, missing key players such as Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, and Joao Palhinha due to injuries. The absence of Kane was particularly noticeable in the first half, with Bayern dominating possession but unable to turn their control into goals.
Lee Jae-Sung was Mainz’s hero, scoring a goal in each half. He opened the scoring shortly before halftime after taking advantage of a poor clearance by Bayern defender Min-Jae Kim. Mainz doubled their lead in the second half when Lee again capitalised on a clever cross from Armindo Sieb, finishing with precision to put Mainz 2-0 up.
Bayern showed signs of life late in the game, with Leroy Sane tapping in a deflected shot from Joshua Kimmich in the 87th minute, but it proved to be too little too late. Mainz held on for a famous 2-1 victory.

This loss marked the end of Bayern’s impressive run under Kompany, who had yet to lose a league game since taking charge. The defeat also came at a crucial time, with Leverkusen’s win tightening the title race.
Meanwhile, Leverkusen continued their strong form with a 2-0 victory over Augsburg. Martin Terrier opened the scoring early, and Florian Wirtz added a second goal just before halftime, ensuring Leverkusen’s seventh consecutive win in the league.
In other Bundesliga action, Borussia Moenchengladbach secured a 4-1 victory over Holstein Kiel, with Alassane Plea scoring a brace.
With Bayern’s lead now reduced to just four points, the race for the Bundesliga title is set to intensify.
