Wolves sack Manager Gary O’Neil after 4 straight EPL defeats

Wolverhampton Wanderers have parted ways with head coach Gary O’Neil following four consecutive Premier League defeats. The decision came after Wolves’ 2-1 loss to Ipswich at home on Saturday, leaving them second from the bottom of the table with only nine points from 16 games.

O’Neil, 41, was appointed as head coach in August 2023 after Julen Lopetegui’s departure and signed a new four-year contract with the club earlier this year. Despite leading the team to a 14th-place finish in his first season, O’Neil’s side is now fighting relegation in the current campaign.

The match against Ipswich was marked by further frustration. After the final whistle, emotions flared, with Rayan Ait-Nouri receiving a second yellow card and Matheus Cunha needing to be restrained. This came after a series of tensions during previous defeats, including an altercation between Mario Lemina and Jarrod Bowen after a loss to West Ham, which saw Lemina stripped of the captaincy.

Following the disappointing loss to Ipswich, O’Neil commented on the team’s off-pitch behaviour, acknowledging that while the players needed to take responsibility, he would support them in overcoming the situation. “We deal with things like that very, very seriously, as you saw last week,” O’Neil stated. “It’s annoying in that we’ve got enough to do at this moment in time. We’ve got enough to fix without me having to spend time on things that go on off the pitch.”

O’Neil’s sacking marks the end of his brief tenure at Wolves, and the club will now be seeking a new direction to avoid the looming threat of relegation.
