16-year-old opens fire, kills father, mother, 2 brothers

On Saturday morning, the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a teenage boy who told the dispatcher he had killed his family, according to a statement from the New Mexico State Police.

When deputies arrived at the home in Belen, the 16-year-old suspect emerged with his hands raised and appeared heavily intoxicated. Inside the residence, deputies discovered the bodies of four victims—Leonardo Leyva, 42; Adriana Bencomo, 35; Adrian Leyva, 16; and Alexander Leyva, 14—who had all suffered suspected gunshot wounds. A handgun was found on the kitchen table.

The victims were identified as the suspect’s parents and two brothers. The teenager has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder.

This incident is part of a broader trend of gun violence in the United States, where, according to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 484 mass shootings so far this year.
