Fear grips Kuje as kidnappers strike, police response alarms residents

Story from Sakinat Musa Abubakar

Residents of Kuje are in shock following a daring kidnapping incident in the early hours of yesterday. Around 1 to 2 a.m., armed kidnappers stormed the home of a local resident, Ali Mai Shago. While Ali managed to escape, his wife was taken hostage, leaving the community reeling in fear.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident unfolded with terrifying precision. Malam Isa Pawa, a neighbour, narrated how Ali’s neighbours, in a desperate bid to seek help, scaled the fence and rushed to a nearby police station, just a few hundred metres away. However, what followed has left the community outraged.

“The police refused to go to the scene. Instead, they shot into the air, which seemed to alert the kidnappers,” Malam Isa recounted. The kidnappers, unchallenged, fled with Ali’s wife, deepening the residents’ fears about their safety.

The response, or lack thereof, by the police has raised serious concerns about their readiness to protect the community during emergencies. Many residents expressed disappointment, with one describing the police actions as “disheartening and unacceptable.”

As of press time, no official statement had been issued by the police, and the kidnappers have yet to contact the family of the abducted woman. The community is now appealing to authorities for swift action to ensure her safe return and prevent future incidents.
