Court sentences three to death by hanging for murder of harmacist

A High Court in Rivers State has sentenced three men to death by hanging for the murder of a pharmacist during a robbery incident.

The court found the convicts guilty of killing Baraka Atake, who was attacked and murdered during a violent robbery in Port Harcourt.

According to court proceedings, the suspects carried out the attack with dangerous weapons, leading to the death of the pharmacist. Prosecutors presented evidence and witness testimonies linking the three men directly to the crime.

Delivering judgment, the trial judge held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and ruled that the offence warranted the maximum penalty under Nigerian law.

The judge subsequently sentenced the three convicts to death by hanging, the statutory punishment for murder under the country’s criminal laws.

The verdict has brought a measure of closure to the family and colleagues of the late pharmacist, while authorities reiterated the need to strengthen security measures to prevent violent crimes in Rivers State.
