25-year-old man arrested for killing teenage wife in Sokoto

The Sokoto State Police Command has apprehended a 25-year-old man, Sufiyanu Aliyu, for allegedly stabbing his 15-year-old wife, Suwaiba Abubakar Bawa, to death during a domestic altercation in Gwanyal village, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, the incident occurred on October 27, 2025, around 7:30 p.m. Rufai said a concerned resident alerted the police about the violent confrontation between the couple.

“Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered that the suspect had allegedly used a knife to stab his wife to death. The murder weapon was recovered as evidence, and the suspect was arrested immediately,” Rufai said.

He added that the victim’s body was taken to a nearby hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her death. During preliminary interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further inquiry and prosecution.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, praised the prompt response of the officers and assured that justice would be served.

“The Command is resolute in ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes face the full consequences of their actions,” he said. “We encourage residents to resolve disputes peacefully and to report any criminal activity without delay.”

The incident has reignited public concern over domestic violence and early marriage, particularly in rural areas where such cases often go unreported. Authorities confirmed that the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
